FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH
6:00 - 8:00PM
(off-site)

We're very excited for next Friday's Trunk or Treat event. Trunk hosts are hard at work on the planning for their trunks, and we're looking forward to seeing our Calabash families there! Thank you to everyone who has donated candy to PTO.

Some important information as you prepare for the event:

TO BRING AND NOT-TO-BRING: We won't be selling food at the event, so you may want to have dinner in advance. Be sure to bring a bag/bucket for your child to use for trick-or-treating. Please leave your pets, scooters, and bikes at home.

  • PARKING: Parking will be available on the neighborhood streets surrounding the church. If you park on the frontage road parallel to Mulholland, please be aware that no parking is allowed on the Mulholland-side of that street. Cars can only park on the side closest to the church.

  • ENTRANCE: The entrance gate of the lot on Deseret Dr. will open at 6PM. No vehicles will be permitted to enter or exit the lot during the event. Upon arrival, kids will receive a glow necklace while supplies last, courtesy of PTO!

  • BATHROOM: Since we won't have access to the inside of the church during the event, PTO is bringing in a portable restroom with sink for washing.

  • SAFETY: The lot is fully gated and we will have professional security guards keeping watch at the entrance and exit gates. However, it will be parents' responsibility to watch their children at the event.
Trunks will be arranged in a modified U-shape to help keep kids within a central area. However, we strongly encourage families to set expectations with their children ahead of time about staying within the designated space.

Please note: the outer edges of the lot can become quite dark. Some families with younger children choose to attend the earlier portion of the event and head home before it gets too dark or crowded.

Lastly, as with traditional trick-or-treating, this is not an allergy-free event. Please talk with your children about any treats they should avoid and help them check their buckets accordingly.

  • PTO TABLE: This year, PTO will have a table near the DJ booth, serving several purposes:
    - Water sales
    - Candy refills for trunk hosts
    - A designated meeting point for any kids who have lost track of their grown-up

Please make sure your children know that if they get separated from you, they should go directly to the PTO table for help.

  • BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR: We would love our families' help leaving the church exactly as we found it, picking up candy wrappers, and being respectful guests of the space. Cleaning candy wrappers that are left behind in the dark after the event is a loaded task, and we could use your help.

During the event, we should have enough candy for all kids to make at least several trips around the lot, depending on your arrival time. Once the candy runs out, the fun will continue as our DJ kicks off a fun Halloween dance party!

Trunk or Treat is a beloved tradition at Calabash, and we can't wait to see you there!

However, it will be parents' responsibility to watch their children at the event. The trunks will be situated in a big U-shape to encourage kids to stay within the inside of the U, but please set your expectations with them in advance. Calabash Family Night

We hope you can join us for our first on-campus family event of the year - Calabash Welcome Back Family Night on Friday, August 25th from 6-7:30PM in our main quad.

This is a chance to catch up with Calabash friends - and make new ones! Our DJ will be leading some dance games, and we'll have a special appearance by our mascot, Cubby. Food trucks will be out front for families to purchase dinner/dessert and eat with friends at our lunch tables. PTO will be selling Spirit Wear and collecting YES Fund pledges as well.

Additionally, two of our teachers will be leading some family-friendly activities throughout the evening. Calabash is fortunate to have two National Board Certified Teachers on our staff, Mrs. Tracy Elchyshyn (5th grade) and Mrs. Shirley Howell (3rd grade). Part of being an NBC Teacher involves organizing additional educational activities and efforts beyond the classroom every year, and when they do so during our events, our whole community wins.

Wear your Calabash Red and join us as we celebrate the beginning of the school year together!

Incoming TK/K Playdate AT THE BEACH

Hi Calabash Parents!

I'm excited to welcome your families to our summer playdates for our incoming TK and Kindergarten students. We have three playdates scheduled throughout the summer with details below. One will be at the beach, and two at a local park. You are welcome to join in any or all of them that fit your schedule. These playdates are a great opportunity to meet other Calabash families, ask any questions you may have, and give your child a soft transition into school. At the park, we'll have some organized ice-breaker games for the kids as well. Please see the schedule below! A few notes:

  • The PTO will be at all the playdates, wearing our red Calabash shirts.

  • If your kids have red shirts, it would be great if they could wear them so we can easily identify our group. We will also be selling our Calabash Spirit Wear shirts at the park. Most of the kids end up wanting to change into them right away, and it brings a wonderful sense of instant school spirit to the playdates.

  • When you arrive for the park playdates, we'll give the kids name tags to wear so we can all start to learn names.

  • Siblings welcome -- these playdates are for the entire family.

  • Be sure to pack drinks and snacks for your family so you can stay and play as long as you want.

Additionally, I am happy to share that TK/KINDER ORIENTATION for all incoming TK/Kinder students and their parents will be on Friday, August 11th @ 1:00PM at Calabash. This is where students will learn who their teacher is, get to tour their new classrooms, and see our Kinder yard from the inside. More details about Orientation will come from the school and PTO as it approaches. The first day of school will be Monday, August 14th.

We're looking forward to meeting all of our new (and returning) Calabash families this summer! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Best,

Incoming 1st Grade Playdate at the Park

Hi Incoming 1st Grade Families!

While I know summer has just begun, I wanted to put a date on your radar so you can plan around it as you solidify your summer plans. Many of you participated in our incoming TK/Kinder summer playdates last year, which gives the kids and families a chance to meet each other and have a soft transition into the school year. For 1st grade, we like to continue this tradition with a summer playdate just before the school year begins. We will have new families join the grade who are eager to meet people, and it gives our kids a chance to reconnect before the first day of school.

We hope your families can join us for a park playdate on Saturday, August 12th starting at 10:00am at Grape Arbor Park in Calabasas. Wear your Calabash shirts (or other red shirts) if you have them so we can all recognize each other!

Date: Saturday, August 12th

Time: 10AM - 12PM

Where: Grape Arbor Park (5100 Parkville Rd. Calabasas)

Be sure to pack drinks and snacks for your family so you can stay and play as long as you want. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will send out a reminder for this playdate as we get into August!

Due to the expected heat wave that will peak this weekend, we are adjusting the start time of this playdate to 9:00AM to stay a little cooler. Grape Arbor is well shaded, but be sure to pack water and dress accordingly.

We have an amazing Calabash dad, Eric Grindler, who owns the MyGyms in Encino and Woodland Hills and is also Calabash's weekly P.E. provider, coming to lead some games for the kids. You'll discover quickly why all our kids (and families) adore him. We are also excited to let you know that barring any schedule changes, we expect all of our TK/Kinder teachers, as well as our Principal to be in attendance at this first playdate for our families to meet.

Best,

Kate Eisenberg

End of Year Beach Day

PTO is inviting all our families to celebrate the end of the year together by joining us for an all-school beach playdate on Saturday, June 10th, beginning at 10:30AM, at Zuma Beach (30000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265).

With the weather this week, we anticipate a cool beach day. We suggest bringing sand toys, balls and activities, and sweatshirts in addition to your usual beach gear. We're looking forward to enjoying a day of fun with fellow Calabash families. Calabash PTO will have a pop-up tent set up at/near Tower 12. Stop by the PTO tent for donuts between 10:30am and 12:30pm, or as long as our supplies last!

We hope you'll join us for a fun, low-key day in celebration of the end of the school year!

Multicultural Festival - Day 2 (Grades TK-2*)

Multicultural Festival - Day 2 (Grades TK-2*)

The students and teachers have been hard at work preparing a beautiful program for our annual Multicultural Festival at Calabash next Thursday, June 1st and Friday, June 2nd. We are excited to welcome parents onto campus for the performances, which will begin at 8:30AM in our Main Quad/Checkerboard area, and run for about an hour. Each student will perform on both days, in a grade-level routine and in a whole-school finale dance.

The Thursday performance will be professionally recorded by Calabash parent and professional videographer Lee Diskin. PTO will be selling a digital video recording for $25. Details are below.

A few important notes and reminders for our families:

  • Please see any emails from your room parents and/or teachers about the requested attire for your grade level. Students should come to school dressed in that attire on both Thursday and Friday. We would love to see 100% participation in this!

  • While students will perform on both days, the audience is divided by grade level due to limited space. Parents whose oldest child at Calabash is in grades 3-5 are invited to attend on Thursday, June 1st, while parents whose oldest child is in grades TK-2nd are invited to attend on Friday, June 2nd. If you are unable to attend on your invited day, please contact calabashptopresident@gmail.com

  • Limited seating will be available for the performance, including reserved seating as a thank you for our yearlong safety valet volunteers. Standing room will be available as well.

  • We kindly request respectful video/photo-taking. We understand all parents would like to get the perfect photos of their little one(s). However, parents rushing forward mid-show, blocking others' views, or creating their own 'front row' by sitting in front of our lines of chairs causes problems for others and can disrupt the space needed for teachers/dance instructors to guide the students through their performances. By splitting the performance over two days, we hope to allow everyone a better view of their child and appreciate your help treating others with kindness. Thank you!

  • Entry for parents coming to campus for Multicultural Festival will be at the Deseret Drive gate, between the staff parking lot and the outdoor classroom, in order to keep the main gate clear for student entry in the morning. We anticipate the Deseret gate opening to parents around 8:15AM. Please wrap the line toward the back of the campus, rather than blocking the staff parking lot.

To order the professional video recording of the Multicultural Festival for $25, see the ordering instructions below. For all methods of payment, please put “MC Festival Recording – {Your Child’s Name}” in the memo line.
