Become an Approved LAUSD Volunteer
In order to be on campus during the school day as a volunteer in the classroom or with PTO, you first have to be cleared annually as an approved LAUSD Volunteer. This is a district-wide approval process that ensures every adult on campus has been screened through Megan's Law, has been reviewed by the Principal, and has permission to be there.
To become an approved LAUSD volunteer for the 2026-2027 school year, these are the steps below.
Step 1
Complete the online LAUSD Volunteer Application. The link is: volunteerapp.lausd.net. Scroll to the bottom where it says "LAUSD Parent/Guardian" and enter your Parent Portal credentials, or create an account.
Tip #1: The application is fairly self-explanatory, but make sure when it asks what kind of volunteer you want to be, you select something from the Tier II list, not the Tier III list. If you select Tier III, it will trigger you to need fingerprinting.
Tip #2: Many people get stuck at the very end of the application. When they go to click submit, it’s unclickable. If this happens to you, look just above the signature line for a paragraph that says “I commit to following the LAUSD Volunteer Commitment form and District policy.” Click the link for the Commitment Form, which will open a pop-up. Once you accept, the final check box should be clickable and you can submit.
Step 2
Submit proof of recent TB test (within the past 4 years). Your TB test is good for 4 years from the test date, so you will not have to complete this annually. The LAUSD TB Clearance form for your physician or medical provider is linked here, but any other proof of TB will also be accepted.
Email the completed TB form to Principal Gillis at exg4456@lausd.net and ask her to please process your volunteer application. Your online application does not move forward or go into the processing queue at the district level until the Principal signs off on your TB test.
Step 3
The application then goes to processing with the district. It can take anywhere from about 2-6 weeks, depending on their backlog. You'll get an email from the district when you're approved, and the office will give you an official Volunteer Badge shortly thereafter.
Logging back into the Volunteer App Portal will indicate your current application status:
”Incomplete” or “Error” : Indicates a lack of TB or other issue
”Pending” : Indicates the school has not yet approved your application
”Processing” : Indicates the school has confirmed completion of your application and it is in queue for final approval with the district Volunteer Office
Please email president@calabashpto.org if you have submitted both your online application and TB test and it has been more than 2+ weeks that your application stays 'pending' or 'incomplete.'
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Calabash!
